Chocolate Mhallabiye (milk pudding) with Cherry Sauce
Mhalabiye is one of the most popular and delectable middle eastern desserts and one of the easiest to make. It is rich, smooth and subtly perfumed with rose water. In this version, this delicacy is made even richer by the addition of semisweet decadent chocolate, and bejeweled with a refreshing cherry sauce. A pair from heaven!
Chocolate Mhallabiye (milk pudding) with Cherry Sauce

Ingredients
For the mhallabiye
- 2 cups milk
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 oz bittersweet chocolate chopped
- 1 tsp rose water
For the cherry sauce
- 1 cup cherries pitted
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- A few drops of lemon juice
Instructions
- Place the milk and sugar in a saucepan and mix to combine.
- Dissolve the corn starch in the 1/4 cup water and add to the milk mixture along with the chopped chocolate.
- Cook on medium heat stirring constantly until the pudding is smooth and thickened. Stir in the rose water and remove the saucepan from the heat.
- Ladle the pudding into serving cups or dessert bowls.
- Let cool at room temperature then cover with plastic paper and place in the fridge for at least 2 hours.
Prepare the sauce
- Combine all the ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Cook for 5 minutes then remove from the heat.
- Let the sauce cool at room temperature then place in the fridge till serving.
- Top the mhalabiye with a spoonful or two of the cherry sauce, serve and enjoy!
