Kafta in a Tray
This dish is homey and comforting. A thin layer of savory ground meat is topped with juicy tomato slices and baked till tender and moist in a succulent tahini pomegranate sauce. The ultimate goodness in a tray!
Kafta in a Tray

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds ground meat (beef, lamb, turkey…)
- 1 onion finely chopped
- 2 cups fresh parsley finely chopped
- 1 tbsp ground allspice
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tomato grated
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 tomatoes thinly sliced
- 3 tbsp tahini
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 2 tbsp pomegranate molasses
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 C).
- In a large bowl knead the meat with the onion, parsley, allspice, paprika, cinnamon, tomato and salt and pepper.
- Make sure all the ingredients are well combined.
- Spread the meat mixture evenly over the bottom of a round baking dish.
- Arrange the tomato slices in a circular motion over the meat.
- Bake in the heated oven for 20 minutes then remove and carefully pour the meat juices into a small saucepan.
- Add the tahini, lemon juice and pomegranate molasses to the saucepan with the meat juices and whisk the mixture over high heat until it comes to a boil.
- Pour the sauce over the Kafta and return to the oven.
- Turn on the broiler and broil for 15 minutes until the tomatoes start to char.
- Remove from the oven and serve warm with a side of baked potatoes or a green salad and yogurt.
